ACCUSED OF A CRIME? ARRESTED?
Someone in Los Alamos jail needs help? Are you facing charges?
You may feel overwhelmed and frightened, but this legal problem calls for action, not feelings. The best solution begins with a single step: finding a good lawyer. Before arrest in criminal cases, I may convince the prosecutor not to file charges or at least to issue a summons. With a summons you avoid the embarrassment and dislocation of arrest and jail at least until the first hearing.
If you are helping someone in custody in the Los Alamos Detention Center, I can request a hearing and ask the judge to lower the cash or property bond. If you already saw the judge and have been released, the court expects you to hire an attorney within 10 days. In other cases you have received a summons to appear in court with your lawyer. Each case is different as I navigate through the court system, argue to dismiss some or all of the charges, persuade jurors to sign the correct verdict, seek the lightest sentence possible, appeal to higher courts, and every task in between.

There is never any obligation to hire a lawyer, and consultations are an excellent way to gain trust and confidence in your decision to hire which attorney. I have been practicing criminal defense since the 1980s; experience coupled with attention to detail can make a difference in the outcome of your case. Often the issue is not who to hire, but how to pay for a retainer and installments spread out over time.

During regular business hours (9-5, M-F) you may reach my legal secretary who will want some basic information about your case. If you happen to catch me in the office, we can talk right away or as soon as I return. If we are both out of the office, leave a quick message and we will call you right back. After hours, voice messages and emails are forwarded to both of our cell phones to answer only if time permits. If not, we will contact you the next business day.
